Privacy Policy

Hook Wise is a fishing app that shows weather, water and tide conditions for where you fish, and lets you keep a log of your catches. We built it so your fishing information stays with you. This policy explains what the app uses and where it goes.

The short version

• We don't have user accounts, and we don't collect your name or email to use the app.
• Your catch log, photos and saved spots are stored only on your phone. We never receive them.
• We don't sell your information, show ads, or use tracking or analytics tools.

Your location

If you allow it, the app uses your phone's location to find the conditions where you are. You don't have to: you can search for a city, ZIP code or lake, or pick a spot on the map instead. Your location is not sent to us. To get conditions, the app sends the coordinates of your spot directly from your phone to these public data services:

• National Weather Service (weather.gov), for weather and forecasts
• U.S. Geological Survey (waterdata.usgs.gov), for river gauges
• NOAA Tides & Currents (tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov), for tides
• OpenStreetMap's Nominatim search (with Photon by Komoot as a backup), only when you search for a place, to turn the name you type into a spot on the map
• OpenStreetMap, for map images of the area you're viewing, and its Overpass service, to find public piers, docks and boat ramps near your spot
• Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), for public boat ramps and fishing piers when your spot is in Florida (the pier list is hosted on Esri's ArcGIS service)

These are run by U.S. and Florida government agencies, the OpenStreetMap Foundation and volunteer Overpass hosts, and each has its own privacy policy. Like any website, they can see your device's internet address when your phone contacts them.

Catch log and photos

When you log a catch, the app saves the species, size, lure, notes, photo, time, place and the conditions at that time in your phone's storage. If a photo has a time and location saved in it, the app reads them to fill in the catch, and that information stays on your phone. Your catches leave your phone only if you use Export and choose where to send the file. If you uninstall the app or clear its data, your log is deleted, so export it first if you want a copy.

Calendar reminders

If you add a bite-time reminder, the app creates a calendar file on your phone and hands it to your calendar app. We don't see your calendar.

Pro subscriptions

Pro subscriptions are sold through Google Play. Google handles your payment details under the Google Privacy Policy, and we never see your card or bank information. To confirm that a subscription is active, the app sends Google's purchase receipt to our small verification service, which checks it with Google. That receipt doesn't include your name, email or payment details, and we keep only what's needed to confirm your subscription.

Other services the app loads

The app loads its fonts from Google Fonts and its map and sun-and-moon code from Cloudflare's public library service (cdnjs). These services can see your device's internet address when the app loads, as they would for any website.

Children

Hook Wise is meant for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
